Practice Better alternative

Practice Better alternative: NutriCRM vs Practice Better

Practice Better is a mature all-in-one EHR used by many kinds of health practitioners. NutriCRM is narrower: practice software built only for dietitians and nutrition clinics, centred on enquiries, follow-ups, subscriptions and a client app under your own brand. Here is how they differ and who each one suits.

The short answer

Stay on Practice Better if you need HIPAA compliance, insurance superbills, built-in video sessions or a large integrated food database, or if you work across several health disciplines. Consider NutriCRM if you run a nutrition-only practice and the gaps are on the business side: a lead pipeline from enquiry to client, follow-up tracking, subscription status per client, and your own branded app in the App Store and Play Store.

Choose NutriCRM if you want…

  • A lead pipeline that tracks every enquiry from new to converted
  • Follow-ups logged on a timeline for each client, so nobody goes quiet unnoticed
  • Subscription status per client (active, paused, expired) next to their plan
  • A white-label client app published in the app stores under your clinic name
  • Software built only for nutrition practices, without EHR features you will not use
  • Diet plans built in a 7-day meal grid with reusable templates

Choose Practice Better if you need…

  • HIPAA, PIPEDA or GDPR compliance for client records
  • Superbills and insurance-related billing
  • Video sessions inside the platform and the client app
  • A food database of more than 600,000 foods with barcode scanning
  • Programs, courses and group sessions as part of your offer
  • One platform for a multidisciplinary team (nutrition, mental health, coaching)

Where Practice Better is stronger

Practice Better is a full electronic health record, not just a client manager. It covers charting, telehealth video, secure messaging, a client portal, forms, payments and superbills, and it states that it is HIPAA, PIPEDA, PHIPA and GDPR compliant on every plan. If you work in the US and handle protected health information, that compliance alone can decide the question.

It also goes further on nutrition tracking than most practice tools. From the Plus plan up, it lists a food database of more than 600,000 foods with barcode scanning, food and lifestyle journaling, nutrient and weight goal tracking, and wearable connections to Oura, Garmin, Fitbit and Apple Health. Meal planning can be extended through its That Clean Life integration.

Breadth is the other advantage. Practice Better serves dietitians, health coaches, functional medicine doctors, mental health professionals and more, and supports programs, courses and group sessions. A clinic that mixes disciplines can keep everyone in one system.

Where NutriCRM is different

NutriCRM starts earlier in the client journey. Every enquiry enters a lead pipeline (new, contacted, qualified, converted or lost), so a practice can see how many prospects are waiting and which ones went cold. Practice Better does not describe a lead pipeline on its public pages, so if you track enquiries in a spreadsheet today, check how you would handle them there.

After someone becomes a client, NutriCRM keeps the business view next to the clinical one. Follow-up sessions are logged on a timeline per client, subscriptions show as active, paused or expired, and payments and invoices sit on the same record as the diet plan and vitals.

The client app is the other difference. On higher NutriCRM plans, the app clients download from the App Store and Play Store carries your clinic name and branding rather than NutriCRM. Practice Better offers portal branding and a personalised URL on its Plus plan; we could not confirm that it publishes a separately branded app per practice.

Diet planning day to day

In NutriCRM you build a week of meals in a 7-day grid, pull foods and recipes from the database or your own custom foods, and see calories, protein, carbs, fat and fibre calculated per meal. Plans can be saved as templates and reused, then delivered to the client app or exported as a PDF.

Practice Better approaches nutrition through recommendations, protocols, journaling and its nutrition planning feature on the Plus plan, with That Clean Life available for practitioners who want a dedicated meal-plan library. If you mostly coach habits and review food journals, that model works well. If your core deliverable is a structured weekly diet plan, try building one real plan in each tool during the trials.

Team and clinic fit

Practice Better reserves custom roles and permissions, team scheduling, team chat and team reporting for its Team plan, which starts with two practitioner licences and adds more at $50 each per month.

NutriCRM includes custom roles, team-scoped data visibility (own clients, team or everyone) and client assignment to specific dietitians, so a clinic owner can see who is handling which clients and who has capacity. It is built around one discipline, which keeps it simpler for nutrition teams but makes it a weaker fit if your clinic also runs therapy or medical services.

What NutriCRM does not do

NutriCRM is younger and narrower than Practice Better. It has no built-in video calling (it connects to Zoom and Google Calendar instead), no HIPAA certification, no insurance billing and no AI meal plan generation, and the interface is English only. If any of those are requirements, Practice Better or another EHR is the safer choice.

Pricing

As listed on their pricing page in October 2026, Practice Better has a free Sprout plan for students and new practitioners (up to 3 clients) and four paid plans: Starter at $35 per month (10 clients), Professional at $69 (300 clients), Plus at $99 (unlimited clients, nutrition planning and the food database) and Team at $155 for two practitioners. Annual billing lowers each plan, for example Plus to $89 per month.

Several features are paid add-ons, including ePrescribe ($49 per month), the AI charting assistant and SMS reminders billed per text. The Team plan includes free migration into Practice Better.

NutriCRM pricing is quoted on a short demo based on your client volume and team size, and there is a 7-day free trial with no card required.

Switching from Practice Better to NutriCRM

There is no automated import from Practice Better into NutriCRM. Client profiles and diet plan templates are re-created in NutriCRM, which for a solo practitioner usually means a few hours spread over a week.

Before you cancel, check what Practice Better lets you export (client details, notes, forms, plans) and archive anything you need to keep for your records. Intake history and charting notes stay in Practice Better unless you export them.

The lowest-risk approach is to run both side by side. Start new clients in NutriCRM while existing clients finish their current program in Practice Better, then move them over at their next plan cycle.

Frequently asked questions

What are some alternatives to Practice Better?

Common alternatives include Healthie and SimplePractice (EHR platforms), Nutrium (international nutrition software in several languages) and NutriCRM (practice management for nutrition practices with a lead pipeline and a branded client app). Which one fits depends on whether you need compliance and insurance features or a nutrition-only business tool.

How much does Practice Better cost?

As listed on its pricing page in October 2026, paid plans run from $35 per month (Starter, 10 clients) to $155 per month (Team, two practitioners), with lower rates on annual billing. There is also a free Sprout plan for up to 3 clients.

Does Practice Better have a free version?

Yes. The Sprout plan is free for students and those starting out and supports up to 3 clients. Paid plans come with a 14-day free trial, or 30 days on the Team plan.

Is Practice Better legit?

Yes. It is an established company based in Toronto that says it serves more than 50,000 practitioners and is HIPAA, PIPEDA, PHIPA and GDPR compliant. The useful question is whether it fits your type of practice.

Does NutriCRM have video consultations like Practice Better?

No. NutriCRM does not include built-in video calling. It connects to Zoom and Google Calendar so sessions are scheduled from your client records. If in-app video matters to you, that is a point in Practice Better’s favour.

Is NutriCRM HIPAA compliant?

No. NutriCRM does not hold HIPAA certification and does not handle insurance billing. US practices that need HIPAA-compliant records should choose a certified platform such as Practice Better.

Can I move my clients from Practice Better to NutriCRM?

Yes, but not automatically. Client profiles and plan templates are re-created in NutriCRM. Export what you need from Practice Better before your subscription ends, and run both tools side by side for a cycle to avoid gaps.
