- This recipe will make 4 servings of Onion Chutney.
- Slice onions into medium pieces and set aside.
- Heat oil in a pan. Add cumin seeds and dry red chilies. Sauté for a few seconds.
- Add urad dal and sauté until it turns golden yellow. Transfer this to a small dish and let it cool.
- In the same pan, add 1 teaspoon of oil. Add the chopped onions and sauté well for 4 to 5 minutes until the raw smell disappears. Turn off the heat and let it cool.
- Grind the cooled urad dal, cumin seeds, and red chilies into a coarse powder.
- Add the fried onions, salt, tamarind, and jaggery to the grinder.
- Rind to make a paste. Add 2-3 tablespoons of water for a thinner consistency. Be cautious not to add too much water.
- Heat oil in a pan for seasoning. Add mustard seeds and let them splutter. Add curry leaves and turn off the heat.
- Pour this seasoning over the chutney and mix well.
- Enjoy this flavorful Onion Chutney with idlis or dosas for a delicious South Indian breakfast or snack!
