- Rub the fish pieces with a little turmeric and salt. Set them aside for 10-15 minutes.
- In a bowl, whisk the low-fat yogurt until it's smooth and there are no lumps.
- Heat 1/2 tablespoon of oil in a pan.
- Fry the marinated fish pieces until they turn golden brown on both sides. Remove and set them aside.
- In the same pan, add the remaining 1/2 tablespoon of oil.
- Add chopped onions and sauté until they become translucent.
- Add ginger paste and garlic paste and sauté for a couple of minutes until the raw aroma disappears.
- Add turmeric, red chili powder, cumin powder, coriander powder, and a pinch of salt.
- Add chopped tomatoes and cook until they become soft and the oil starts to separate from the mixture.
- Reduce the heat to low and gently add the whisked yogurt to the pan. Stir continuously to prevent curdling.
- Allow the yogurt mixture to simmer for a few minutes until it thickens slightly.
- Gently add the fried fish pieces to the gravy and let them cook for a few more minutes.
- Sprinkle garam masala over the Doi Ilish and give it a gentle stir.
- Garnish with fresh coriander leaves.
- Serve the healthier Doi Ilish hot with steamed rice or whole wheat roti.
- Note- This version of Doi Ilish is lighter on oil and uses low-fat yogurt, making it a healthier option while preserving the traditional flavors of this Bengali dish. Enjoy it with steamed rice for a wholesome meal.
